Sweetie Sweetie Pie!

The doctor may tell you that too much of sweet stuff is not good for your health. How about too much of Sweetie? Quite the contrary to the 1st sentence of this blog, we are pretty sure Sweetie would be good for your soul.

Known to her fosterer/rescuer as being sweet natured and loving, she would be the perfect loyal companion anyone could ever ask for.

Sweetie was involved in an accident not too long ago, her left hind leg was broken and is not 100% mended. Hence she now walks with a slight limp. She needs a home as her fosterer will be moving away by coming Sept/Oct. Whoever who is interested in fostering or adopting this sweetie pie, pls email us at info@2ndchance-kennel.com

Could you pls help this abandoned dog?

We recently received an SOS from a kind samaritan in Shah Alam who's been feeding this doggie in her back lane -believed to have been abandoned by previous owner. The dog doesn't go anywhere else and will remain in the back lane rain or shine as she's already used to the kind samaritan's house. Sadly, the lady could only feed her but cannot adopt her as the family members are not keen on having pets in the house.

The dog is longing to have a place called home and most probably is wondering why she was abandoned. If anyone out there is willing to welcome this furkid into their loving arms and home, pls contact Wei Yang @ 012-3535435 for more information.

Location of the dog: No41, Jalan Sepakat 25/51, Taman Sri Muda 40400, Shah Alam, Selangor D.E

The 4L's

Four 2-months old puppies were dumped at Second Chance two days ago! The puppies were placed inside a box with a "SORRY" note. :( Although we understand that everyone has their own difficult circumstances, we hope that these kind of incidents do not happen. It is extremely unfair to the puppies.

There were three male puppies and one female. Mrs Lai has named them..

Lucy
Lennon
Louis
Lucas and Louis (left and right respectively)

An 'emo' picture of Lennon
Another picture of Louis..

They were full of fleas when Second Chance first found them. Thankfully, we had Elaine and her boyfriend at the shelter to help out. They spent two hours cleaning and feeding the dogs! Anyways, Second Chance would also like to thank them for their donation as stated below:

1 bag of rice (10kg),
- 2 bags of dog kibbles ( 8kg each), and
- 2 bags of puppy kibbles (1.5kg each)

Thank you so much for your double help, Elaine and boyfriend!!!

And on a separate note, whoever interested in adopting any of the three charming dudes and one beautiful dudette, DO contact Second Chance! :)

Ready for Love Again

Meet Vincent.

Madam Ho rescued him from Bt 9 Jalan Cheras about one month ago. At that time, he smelled pretty bad and was suffering injuries to his jaw, ears, under the eye and his paws had holes as well. To make matters worse, maggots were found in his wounds.

Excuse me for showing the gory pictures.. You may proceed to the AFTER pictures if sights of cuts and wounds make you go weak in the leg.

Wound below his eye.

Cuts on his paws.

But fast forward to today and you will find that Vincent has almost fully recovered. Vincent is about one or two years old and from the pictures, it is pretty obvious that he is a Shih Tzu. All he needs now is a home and loving adopters to fill his life.

Currently, he is being fostered by Mrs Lai. He is particularly close with Mrs Lai's Golden Retriever, Kuzco. Look at all that PDA! (PDA stands for Public Display of Affection)

According to Mrs Lai, despite his small size, he chases Kuzco around the house. Anyone can see how well Vincent gets along with other dogs.

Vincent is an adorable and friendly boy, although he can get very playful at times.

He loves his bed and sleeps like an angel.

On a separate note, Vincent has also been vaccinated and neutered. All he really needs now is a new home with people to love him.

So, any takers?

Motivation for Lily

Thanks to PetFinder.my, Mrs Lee was able to know about Lily. She decided to adopt Lily due to her strong resemblance with her previous dog, Shereen.

However, there were various concerns raised throughout the adoption process namely, whether Lily could get along with Mrs Lee's five rabbits as well as her resistance to walk in the park.

The rabbits..
Mrs Lai, together with Annie, dropped by Mrs Lee's place in Bandar Utama to quickly check up on Lily's progress. Initially Lily did not deal well with the five rabbits but given one week, she had began to settle down with them.

Although Lily has had some slight difficulties in adapting to her new home, we hope that Mrs Lee and her family do not lose patience. After all, it is clear that Mrs Lee and her daughter like Lily very much. And Lily, of course appears to have taken a liking to the family members as well as the rabbits.

We are sure that given a little more time, Lily will be able to adapt to her new home. Hopefully the one month time frame given by Mrs Lee for Lily to adjust will be sufficient for her to get used to her new environment!

Good luck, Lily! We, from Second Chance wish you all the best!

Food For Thought: Should We Feed The Strays?

Not a life we can ever imagine

We are often told that feeding the strays is unwise. Maybe it is the idea that we are encouraging them to reproduce, or perhaps people just do not want hungry strays hanging in front of their house. Whatever it is, this is NOT the truth. In fact, feeding the street dogs might possible be a considerable alternative. Before you start shooting me down, do finish reading this article first. :)

Many people disapprove of stray-feeding because “it encourages strays to breed”. Theoretically, giving these dogs food keeps them alive, and provides them with opportunities to breed. However, withholding food from these street dogs is by no means a way to curb their population. Even hungry dogs can propagate, and their newborn puppies often go hungry as their mommies hardly have enough food for themselves, let alone milk to nurse them. Some people might think that letting the dogs starve to death would be a good way to prevent the dogs from breeding. No doubt, it is a way. But is it the most humane way to control the stray population?

What we, from Second Chance suggests, is to sterilize strays.  Spaying prevents the strays from further multiplying. Gradually, the stray population will reduce as the strays who have been spayed are not able to reproduce more puppies. As a matter of fact, feeding is a great way to assist in making this spaying activity a success. The “Spay It Forward” program as carried out by HOPE Dog Rescue requires the dogs to be familiar with the volunteers and hence they will develop enough trust for the volunteers to approach them such that we are able to bring them to our vets, be it for sterilization or for injuries sustained from industrial accidents or dog fights. Without this trust, it would be difficult for any spaying program to reach the strays.

Again, under HOPE Dog Rescue, volunteers also get to know the dogs well through regular feeding rounds. This allows and eases them in keeping track of the stray population in various industrial areas, as well as any new pups who are eligible for sterilization. This way, they can sterilize them before they reach breeding age. As such, their feeding and sterilization programs go hand in hand. This is a more organized and humane way of preventing breeding, rather than simply withholding food from stray dogs. This way, they can live their lives as strays in marginally increased comfort without more unwanted pregnancies. These dogs may not be pedigrees, but they deserve the right to live as much as you and me.

Another reason people commonly give for not feeding strays that is that “it attracts vermin”. The rationale behind this is that when you leave food for strays, you are also feeding pests such as rats and cockroaches with the leftovers. To a certain extent, this may be true.  However, it must be reminded that the strays that live in the industrial areas often have no proper source of food apart from what is given to them by animal activists and animal shelter volunteers. If they are not fed, these dogs would be so desperate for food that they would devour bones, rubbish, stale food, and even stones.  They would be so famished that they’ll resort to eating stones! Needless to say, they’ll await the weekly visits made by volunteers with much anticipation, and every morsel is ravenously gobbled down. In other words, there’s simply nothing left for pests!
That is why nourising the strays might not be such a bad idea after all. Truth is, they have no cushy homes to find solace in. They don’t have anyone to love them like we do. And they don’t have anyone to bring them to the vet when they’re sick or in pain. With all this in mind, we can’t bear to let them go without food as well, or to watch them die a slow and agonizing death without doing anything to help. Simply put, our goal is to reduce and manage the stray population by sterilizing them, while allowing the remaining dogs to live a better life for the rest of their days.
Our furrizens appreciate their paws-licking good meals very much!

Would you like to help us give these innocent, hungry-loving animals a chance to live? Their lives are hard enough, and it’s only right we give them a little kindness. A little kindness goes a long way, and it would mean the world to them. If you would like to sponsor food for these street and factory dogs, please email info@2ndchance-kennel.com. The most precious gift you can give is the gift of love.
Thank you, HOPE Dog Rescue (Singapore)!

Ann Returns, Victor Bids Farewell

So, Ann was returned not too long ago as she did not seem to be able to adapt well with her new adopted family. The adopter decided to return Ann and took Victor back home instead! More about Victor here

The adopter looks happy with her new choice.. and I guess that applies to Victor as well.

We have heard through follow-up calls with the adopter that Victor is now happy in his new home and the adopter's family likes him a lot.

Well, we all know the saying, if it is meant to be, it will be. I guess that is what happened with Victor. He found his new home. :)

Mary got adopted!

It was 1st April 2012 and while everyone in the rest of the world was having fun playing pranks on each other, a guardian angel smiled upon Mary and decided that Mary should be having a different kind of fun-
that is to be adopted into a loving family, with 2 young boys to play with and be showered with lots of TLC!

Thanks to Michael Theng and family for making the right choice -- to adopt. Since it was on April Fool's day that the family made a connection with Mary and vice versa, a name change was inevitable- Mary is now known as April.

April's 2 other siblings are still looking for their forever homes and rightful human companions. Interested parties may contact us for more info. The white pup is Max (male) and the cream coloured one is May (Female).

Opal For Adoption

This is Opal.

She is very playful and loves moving about. Opal doesnt look like the typical dog. She has a little of that terrier look. And her brown hair is longer than average dogs with shades of black. It would be good if Opal can find an owner with a home that has space for her to run outside as she enjoys her exercise and play. She is friendly with humans and love crowding your feet to greet you. She also enjoys bathing. Picture below shows Opal being bathed by one of our volunteers, Mun Ee.

So.. who's up for adopting playful and frisky little Opal?
